"The best 2D, text-based adventure game"

I have been updating Have Spell Will Travel.

HSWT is a text-based adventure game of fantasy questings and kobold killing. The peaceful village of Merripond is in danger from the evil machinations of the wizard Warren Fogbender. YOU choose from one of over two hundred characters with a unique set of abilities. As you progress through the quests you will face countless challenges. Each challenge requires you to test one of your abilities - with a catch: you do not know which ability is the best to use in any given situation. Sure, you might have a good Sorcery ability, but maybe your opponent is wearing their anti-magic underpants today?

Only luck, practice, and a little intuition will guide you. Success will mean that you are closer to your goal. Failure results in pain, poisoning, curses, the indignity of returning to the village empty-handed... or worse!

Decisions, decision...

I have been developing HSWT since the summer of 2015, and I trust you enjoy the latest updates.

What's new?

Zombies! Plenty of new zombies. But do not fear! The Temple of the Frog have started their own line in cheap holy water, which they will sell to you for a small sum of six gold coins.

One of several new baddies waiting to make your quest difficult today.

There are also new locations, objects, and a new trap in The Dungeon. I have also tweaked the user interface and some of the game mechanics in the interest of game balance.

Objects in HSWT modify your stats, in one way or another.

...and, did I mention new quests? Well, you will have to try it out yourself.

Play Have Spell Will Travel now.

That's all folks. Do let me know if you enjoyed it. If you have, then you might also like to read my other HSWT posts.

New characters in Have Spell Will Travel

Following some feedback from players, I have implemented some new characters into Have Spell Will Travel (and I intend to add some more soon!).

What is Have Spell Will Travel? Only the best 2D text-based adventure game ever! In #HSWT you can choose one from over two hundred characters in an attempt to complete various quests. You have at your disposal 15 statistics that describe your character. Each challenge will require you to test these statistics, however you are never told how difficult the challenges are. It is up to you to work out how best to tackle a challenge, and up to you to decide whether you will use your magical items to assist you.

Character sheet for a Dwarf Adventurer. Dwarfs are good at 'Endurance' and 'Intuition' based tasks.
Here is an example of a challenge.  The Rabid sheep can be tackled by testing one of five of your stats, but some are more difficult to complete than others. Even though my Dwarf is better at combat than hiding, it may be the case that hiding is easier to complete than combat. Success at Have Spell Will Travel is a careful blend of luck, lateral thinking and extreme violence (well, not the last one).

I have recently added three new characters: The Treant, the Feline and the Robot. Where the Treant is strong and wise, the Feline is a stealthy warrior. The Robot on the other hand is extremely tough and intelligent, however it cannot eat or drink potions; nor can it visit the healer or be turned into a Vampire. This is Have Spell Will Travel the hard mode, because it has not escaped my attention that the robot cannot replenish lost lives in any way. Maybe I will fix this in the next version, with some sort of robot puncture repair kit.

If you have read this far, then it is likely that you will really want to just click this link and play it.

If you enjoy #HaveSpell, then do please let me know (especially if you defeat Warren Fogbender, meet Bert or find the whereabouts of the Armoured Weremole).

New update to Have Spell Will Travel

Today I have pushed out a new update to my adventure game Have Spell Will Travel.

If you don't know Have Spell Will Travel, it is a game of luck, skill and fantasy questing. You take control of one of over a hundred different protagonists who then go on a series of adventures against the computer, all the time trying not to die. It lives somewhere in between the games of Talisman and Top Trumps.

What's new?

Thanks to some feedback from players I have reduced the cost of various items in the village. You can now stock up on magic potions at a much cheaper price.

There are also a number of new challenges to get you going, including an endpoint to the dungeon. There are several new items to discover, but I wont say much about that so as not to spoil the surprise of finding them.

So, if you have some time to kill, and you feel like getting killed by fantastic beasties in a fantasy setting, then do check out Have Spell Will Travel now!

A new update to Have Spell Will Travel #HaveSpell

I released a new update to my adventure game "Have Spell Will Travel" today.

What's new?
  • Three new character classes - the Paladin, Mystic and Ninja.
  • One new quest (can you find the awesome thing from Lake Mulbz).
  • Loads of new items and creatures that will try and stop you from getting those items.
  • I've tweaked the experience system so that it is not possible to gain loads of experience all at once.

Do please check it out.

New update for Have Spell Will Travel #havespell

New updates.
I've updated my #javascript adventure game.  There are improvements to the interface; more quests and locations; a new temple and junk shoppe have opened in the village; cursed items (that cannot be dropped unless you visit the temple first) and loads more encounter too.  I've made a few adjustments to game balance, including the starting attributes for characters.  Most of the paid-for items now cost much less of your hard-earned gold too.

If you want to kill some kobolds, then Have Spell Will Travel is for you.

Have Spell Will Travel #HaveSpell

Introducing my latest game - Have Spell Will Travel - a fast-faced RPG lurking somewhere near where Talisman meets Top Trumps.  Choose from one of a hundred different characters; find treasure and kill kobolds.

The current version has over one hundred different encounters across over thirty different locations.  There are currently twelve quests to complete but more are coming soon.  Can YOU beat Warren Fogbender?  Can YOU restore peace to the village of Merripond?  Find out here.

Use the hashtag #HaveSpell on Twitter to send me love as this will encourage me to continue development of this game.

#JavaScript

Writing a #javascript game 3

So, I have been making slow but steady progress with my Javascript text adventure game.  So far I have implemented quests which can be started at the village.  Each quest is a series of challenges which I have encoded in a json file.  Each challenge script requires the player to pick from a list of statistics in Top Trumps style in an attempt to defeat the challenge.  Failure to beat the challenge results in pain, damage, death or failure of the quest.  Completing a challenge will result in experience points that can be used to increase your stats (not yet implemented).  Completing quests will result in more things becoming unlocked in the village (starting with the village healer and the tavern).  I have also implemented a json file containing a variety of artefacts that can be discovered and used by the player.  Some artefacts are 'static' in that they always apply one or more bonus or penalty to the player's stats.  Non static objects can be activated.  Last night I implemented weapons (the player can only have one weapon at a time) and armour (which can only be worn when the player is not currently engaged in a quest).

I have decided to use Sweet Alert for all the message boxes in the game.  This is because Sweet Alert is really, well, sweet, and also because it is very easy to use.  Below is an image of a Sweet Alert message box in action.

An example of a sweet alert message.
SweetAlert was created by Tristan Edwards, you can follow him on Twitter or Dribbble for updates and other cool projects!

See you next time for more Have Spell Will Travel updates.

Writing a #javascript game 2

Today I started writing the game data, starting with the stats that describe the player.  In the game of Have Spell Will Travel you take the role of a fantasy character questing through various challenges.  Anyone who played the Unofficial Talisman Game might know what I'm doing here.  Each player is a list of statistics that they use to defeat challenges.  The player chooses a race and a profession.  This combination determines their overall statistics.

Today I wrote some scripts for choosing a combination of race and profession and then providing a character sheet that can be opened and closed with some JavaScript, as in the images below.

Choosing one of the different races.  More coming soon.

Today I have been creating these collapsible stats boxes.

Writing a #javascript game 1

So, with a little time on my hands and a desire to learn some more Javascript I've been working on a new game.  "Have Spell Will Travel" is a  browser game set in a fantasy Dungeons and Dragons meets Top Trumps/Talisman-esque world.  I will avoid writing too much about the game play for now until there is something to actually play.

My first step was to define the various css box-model elements and make sure they work across all platforms.  Next step was to define some nice styles for the background images, and dialogue boxes.  I have chosen to use styled paragraphs with onclick=() methods rather than hyperlinks for navigation.

The page can be broken down into a heading box, (an initially hidden) status box, and a dialogue box that contains the navigation.

I am rather pleased with the progress so far.  More posts soon...
